iPhone 17 PTA Tax in Pakistan: Complete 2026 Guide for All Models

Are you planning to buy a new iPhone 17, or are you already using a non-PTA iPhone in Pakistan?
If your SIM is not working in the phone, there is a reason for it.
Most people in Pakistan already know this reason. But if you are visiting Pakistan, or you are sending an iPhone to family here, this rule may be new to you.
The rule is called PTA registration. Every mobile phone used in Pakistan has to be registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority before it can accept a local SIM. If the phone is not registered, no Pakistani SIM will work in it. Only Wi-Fi will work.
To register your iPhone 17, you have to pay a tax. People call it PTA tax. It is collected by FBR, and the amount depends on which iPhone 17 model you have, and whether you register it with your CNIC or your passport.
Every iPhone series has a different tax. If you are looking for an older model, we have separate guides for the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 15. This one covers the iPhone 17 series. If you want to check any model quickly, our PTA tax calculator gives you an estimated figure in seconds.
Estimated PTA Tax on iPhone 17 Models
| Model | CNIC | Passport |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | around PKR 214,000 | around PKR 183,000 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | around PKR 211,000 | around PKR 173,000 |
| iPhone 17 Air | around PKR 176,000 | around PKR 152,000 |
| iPhone 17 | around PKR 155,000 | around PKR 129,000 |
| iPhone 17e | not established yet | not established yet |
Is There an Official PTA Tax for the iPhone 17?
No. There is no official tax figure for any iPhone 17 model.
FBR decides the customs value of a mobile phone through a document called a Valuation Ruling. The ruling that applies right now is Valuation Ruling 2070/2026, issued on 22 April 2026. It replaced the older ruling from January 2026.
Open that ruling and look for the iPhone 17. It is not there.
The ruling covers used and old mobile phones, and the newest Apple models in it are from the iPhone 15 series. No FBR document gives a fixed customs value, or a fixed tax, for a new iPhone 17.
How the tax is actually decided
PTA does not set the tax. FBR does.
When you submit your IMEI to DIRBS, the system checks your device, applies the duties and taxes that are in force, and gives you a payment slip called a PSID. The amount on that PSID is your tax. It is calculated for your phone, on the day you apply.
Why every website shows a different number
Websites build their figures from three things: older valuation data, importer estimates from the time the phone launched, and their own guess about the exchange rate.
Change any one of those and the number moves.
That is why the iPhone 17 Pro Max is listed anywhere from around PKR 214,000 to around PKR 225,000. Same phone, different assumptions, a gap of more than PKR 11,000.
| What is official | What is an estimate |
|---|---|
| The duties and taxes that apply to imported phones | The final rupee figure for any iPhone 17 |
| The method used to calculate the total | The exchange rate used to reach that figure |
| Valuation Ruling 2070/2026 | Every iPhone 17 tax table online, including ours |
| The PSID generated for your IMEI | Any number quoted before your phone is checked |
PTA Tax on Each iPhone 17 Model

iPhone 17
The standard model, and the cheapest one to register in this series. Around PKR 155,000 on CNIC, and around PKR 129,000 on passport.
iPhone 17 Air
This model sits between the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models. Around PKR 176,000 on CNIC, and around PKR 152,000 on passport.
iPhone 17 Pro
Around PKR 211,000 on CNIC, and around PKR 173,000 on passport. The saving on passport registration is the biggest in the series on this model.
iPhone 17 Pro Max
This is the model most people search for, and it is the most expensive one to register. The iPhone 17 Pro Max PTA tax is around PKR 214,000 on CNIC, and around PKR 183,000 on passport.
Storage does not change the tax. FBR values the model, not the storage size. The 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions all pay the same.
iPhone 17e
Apple released the iPhone 17e on 11 March 2026. It costs USD 599, which is USD 200 less than the standard iPhone 17.
Because it is a new model, no estimate for it is circulating yet. Its tax should be lower than the standard iPhone 17, because the tax follows the value of the device. But giving you a number here would mean inventing one, and we are not going to do that. Submit your IMEI to DIRBS and you will get the real figure.
How PTA Tax Is Calculated

PTA tax is not one fixed fee. It is several duties and taxes added together.
| Component | What it is |
|---|---|
| Customs value | The value FBR gives your device, in US dollars |
| Customs Duty | Charged on that value |
| Regulatory Duty | An extra duty on imported phones, changed in Budget 2026-27 |
| Sales Tax | Applied to the value, at a rate that depends on which value band the phone falls into |
| Withholding Tax | Applied at import. Filers can adjust it against income tax |
| Mobile Levy | A fixed slab based on the value of the device |
Here is the order it happens in:
- FBR gives your phone a value in US dollars
- That value is converted into rupees, using the exchange rate on that day
- The duties and taxes above are applied to that rupee figure
- The total is given to you as a PSID
Step 2 is the one people miss. Your tax is tied to a dollar value, not a rupee value. If the rupee moves two or three percent, a tax of two hundred thousand rupees moves by several thousand.
Why Two People Can Pay Different Tax on the Same iPhone 17
Two people can register the same iPhone 17 Pro Max and get two different amounts. Here is why.
The customs value. FBR decides it. It may accept the invoice you show, or it may apply its own value.
The exchange rate. It is applied on the day your phone is checked, not the day you bought it.
CNIC or passport. These two fall under different rules, so the amounts are different.
The date. Budget 2026-27 came into effect on 1 July 2026. A phone checked before that date and a phone checked after it are treated under different rates.
This is not a fault in the system. This is how the system works. It is also the reason no table online, including the one on this page, can give you your exact number.
CNIC vs Passport PTA Tax
| Factor | CNIC | Passport |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | People living in Pakistan | Travellers coming from abroad |
| Cost | Higher | Lower on every iPhone 17 model |
| Travel record needed | No | Yes, verified by FIA |
| Basis | Treated as a local import | Treated under traveller baggage rules |
The difference is not a discount from PTA. The two routes fall under different laws, so the tax is different.
For passport registration, FIA must have a record of you arriving in Pakistan. If there is no record, DIRBS will reject your application. There is no way around this.
Since 30 June 2019, there is no free allowance on any device. Every phone registered in Pakistan has to pay FBR duties and taxes.
Registration Deadlines
How long can you use an unregistered iPhone 17?
60 days. The clock starts the day you first insert a Pakistani SIM. During those 60 days the phone works normally on all networks. After 60 days, it stops receiving any service.
What happens if you miss it?
You can still register, but you will pay the tax plus a fine set by FBR.
What about overseas Pakistanis?
If you are visiting Pakistan, you can register your phone temporarily for 120 days, free of cost, and you can do this on every visit. Beyond that, full registration applies.
These deadlines are set by PTA and can be revised. Confirm the one that applies to your case on the PTA DIRBS FAQ page.
How to Check the Exact PTA Tax on Your iPhone 17
There are four official ways. All of them are run by PTA.
DIRBS portal
Go to dirbs.pta.gov.pk. Make an account, enter your IMEI, and the system will generate your PSID with the exact amount you have to pay. Note that this portal is only accessible from inside Pakistan.
*8484#
Dial this from any local SIM registered on your CNIC. You can check your device status and start the registration.
DVS portal
Go to dvs.pta.gov.pk. This tells you whether an IMEI is already registered. It is useful before you buy a phone. It checks status, it does not calculate tax.
Mobile operator franchise
Any Jazz, Zong, Ufone or Telenor franchise can process your DIRBS registration and show you the amount.
Step by Step: How to Register Your iPhone 17 with PTA
- Find your IMEI. Dial *#06# on the phone. Or go to Settings, then General, then About.
- Create a DIRBS account at dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
- Apply. Enter your IMEI and your CNIC or passport details. Your IMEI is sent to the manufacturer for verification, which usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
- Get your PSID. This is your exact tax amount.
- Pay at any bank in Pakistan against that PSID.
- Wait. Once the payment clears, your IMEI is whitelisted within 3 to 4 hours and your SIM starts working.
What Is a PSID?
PSID stands for Payment Slip ID. It is a 17 digit number issued by FBR when you apply for registration. It carries the exact tax for your phone.
How long it is valid: 7 days.
How to pay it: At any commercial bank in Pakistan. The payment reaches FBR through the 1-Link system.
If it expires: The PSID and your application are deleted. You have to apply again. The new amount may be different if the exchange rate has moved.
Can You Pay iPhone 17 PTA Tax in Instalments?
Not through DIRBS. Not right now.
Budget 2026-27 added a provision that allows mobile registration tax to be paid in instalments within the same financial year. That is the law.
But PTA and FBR have not announced a working system for it. DIRBS still gives you one PSID and expects one full payment within 7 days. There is no published process for splitting it.
Some banks and shops offer their own instalment plans for the tax. These are private arrangements, not a PTA facility, and they come with their own terms and charges.
Latest FBR and PTA Updates (July 2026)
Valuation Ruling 2070/2026
Issued on 22 April 2026. It replaced Valuation Ruling 2035/2026 from January and set new customs values for used phones.
If an article still mentions Valuation Ruling 1999/2025, it is working from a ruling that is no longer in force. Most iPhone 17 articles online still do.
Budget 2026-27
Came into effect on 1 July 2026. Regulatory duty on imported smartphones was reduced, with extra relief for mid-range phones.
What this means for you
If you are reading a tax figure that was published before July 2026, it was calculated under the old rates. That covers almost every iPhone 17 article on the internet right now.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating a published figure as final. No table online can give you your exact amount. Only your PSID can.
Using old figures. Most iPhone 17 tax articles were written before Valuation Ruling 2070/2026 and before Budget 2026-27.
Entering the wrong IMEI. Your phone has one IMEI for each SIM slot, and eSIM has its own. Register the right one, or only one slot will work.
Letting your PSID expire. You get 7 days. After that it is gone, and the new amount may be different.
Trusting a dealer who says the phone is already PTA approved. Check the IMEI yourself on dvs.pta.gov.pk before you pay.
Forgetting the 5 device limit. You can register a maximum of 5 devices in a calendar year.
