How Much is iPhone 16 PTA Tax in Pakistan?

The iPhone 17 is out now. And you know what happens every time a new iPhone launches. The older model gets cheaper.
So the iPhone 16 is a smart buy right now. It is last year's phone, the price has dropped, and it is still a great device.
Maybe you are thinking of buying one. Maybe you already bought one, or someone sent you one from abroad. Whatever your case is, before that iPhone 16 works with a Pakistani SIM, you have to pay PTA tax on it.
This guide tells you everything. How much the tax is today, why it changes, and how to check the exact amount for your own phone.
One thing to know first. There is no fixed government price for the iPhone 16 tax. Every figure online is an estimate, including ours. After the 2026-27 budget the tax came down a little, because one of the duties was cut. The only place that gives you the real, final amount is DIRBS.
Buying something else instead? Take a look at the newer iPhone 17 and its tax if you want this year's model. And to check any phone in seconds, run it through our PTA tax calculator.
Estimated PTA Tax on iPhone 16 Models
Here is the estimated tax for all four iPhone 16 models, on both CNIC and passport.
| Model | Passport | CNIC | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 | around PKR 128,766 | around PKR 154,293 | Estimated |
| iPhone 16 Plus | around PKR 135,322 | around PKR 161,949 | Estimated |
| iPhone 16 Pro | around PKR 168,789 | around PKR 198,317 | Estimated |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | around PKR 182,710 | around PKR 213,631 | Estimated |
Is There an Official PTA Tax for the iPhone 16?
No. There is no fixed tax figure for any iPhone 16 model.
The government sets the value of a phone through a paper called a Valuation Ruling. The one being used right now is Valuation Ruling 2070/2026, from 21 April 2026. It replaced the older one from January.
Look for the iPhone 16 in that ruling and you will not find it. The ruling only lists 62 older and used phones. The iPhone 16 is not one of them.
So how is its tax worked out? For a new phone that is not on the list, FBR decides the value using its market and international price, then applies the taxes on top. That is the reason no website can show you an official iPhone 16 figure, and why every number you see, ours too, is just an estimate.
PTA Tax on Each iPhone 16 Model
iPhone 16 PTA Tax
The standard iPhone 16 is the cheapest one to register. The tax is around PKR 128,766 on passport and around PKR 154,293 on CNIC.
iPhone 16 Plus PTA Tax
The Plus has a bigger screen and battery, so its value is a little higher. The tax is around PKR 135,322 on passport and around PKR 161,949 on CNIC.
iPhone 16 Pro PTA Tax
The Pro is a flagship, and the tax shows it. Around PKR 168,789 on passport and around PKR 198,317 on CNIC.
iPhone 16 Pro Max PTA Tax
The Pro Max is the one most people search for, and the most expensive to register. Around PKR 182,710 on passport and around PKR 213,631 on CNIC.
Here is something that surprises people. Storage does not change the tax. FBR looks at the model, not how much storage it has. So the 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions all pay the same. This works the same way for Android flagships. If you are comparing the iPhone 16 against a Samsung, our Samsung S23 PTA tax guide breaks the numbers down the same way.
How PTA Tax Is Calculated
PTA tax is not one single charge. It is a few government taxes added together on top of your phone's value.
| Component | What it is |
|---|---|
| Customs Duty | Charged on the value of the phone |
| Additional Customs Duty | An extra customs charge on imports |
| Regulatory Duty | A duty on imported phones, cut by 20 percent in the 2026-27 budget |
| Sales Tax (GST) | 18 percent normally, or 25 percent for phones worth more than 500 dollars |
| Income Tax | A charge that tax filers can adjust later |
| Mobile Handset Levy | A fixed charge based on the phone's price band |
Here is the order it happens in:
- FBR gives your phone a value in dollars.
- That value is turned into rupees at that day's rate.
- Customs Duty is added.
- Additional Customs Duty is added.
- Regulatory Duty is added.
- Sales Tax is added.
- Income Tax is added.
- The Mobile Handset Levy is added.
- The final amount shows up on DIRBS as your PSID.
Step 2 is the one people forget. Your tax is tied to the dollar, not the rupee. If the rupee drops a little, a tax of two hundred thousand rupees can move by a few thousand, even though nothing about your phone changed.
Why Two People Can Pay Different Tax on the Same iPhone 16
Two people can register the same iPhone 16 Pro Max and get two different amounts. Here is why.
The exchange rate is taken on the day the phone is checked, not the day it was bought. The type of registration matters, because CNIC and passport follow different rules. The date matters too, because the 2026-27 budget changed the rates from 1 July 2026, so a phone checked before that day and one checked after it are not treated the same. And FBR can update the value it gives a phone over time.
None of this means someone made a mistake. This is just how the system works. It is also why no table online, this one included, can give you your exact number.
CNIC vs Passport PTA Tax
| Feature | CNIC | Passport |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | People living in Pakistan | People arriving from abroad |
| Estimated tax | Higher | Lower on every model |
| Travel record needed | No | Yes, checked by FIA |
| Best for | Local residents | Overseas Pakistanis and visitors |
Passport registration works out cheaper on every iPhone 16 model. It is not a discount from PTA. The two routes follow different rules, so the tax is different. For passport registration, FIA needs a record of you arriving in Pakistan. Without it, DIRBS will not accept the application. Either way, check your exact figure on DIRBS before paying.
Registration Deadlines
Treat these as the usual timelines, not fixed rules, because PTA can change them.
Passport registration is usually said to be 30 days from arrival. CNIC registration is usually said to be 60 days from when the phone first uses a Pakistani SIM. If you are visiting from abroad, you can register your phone for free for up to 120 days on each trip.
To be sure about your own case, check the timeline on the official DIRBS help page before you count on it.
How to Check the Exact PTA Tax on Your iPhone 16
There are a few official ways, all run by PTA.
DIRBS Portal
Go to the DIRBS registration portal, enter your IMEI, and pick CNIC or passport. It shows your exact amount and makes a PSID for you to pay. This is the most reliable way, and it works from inside Pakistan.
SMS to 8484
Send your IMEI to 8484 from a local SIM, or dial *8484#, to check your phone's status and start registration.
DVS Portal
Use the PTA device verification service to see if an IMEI is already registered. This is handy before buying a used phone. It only checks status; it does not work out the tax.
Mobile Operator Franchise
Any Jazz, Zong, Ufone, or Telenor franchise can do your DIRBS registration and tell you the amount.
For the real figure you actually pay, DIRBS is the one that counts.
Step by Step: How to Register Your iPhone 16 with PTA
- Find your IMEI by dialling *#06#, or open Settings, then General, then About.
- Go to dirbs.pta.gov.pk and make an account.
- Sign in with your CNIC or passport details.
- Pick CNIC or passport registration.
- Enter your iPhone 16 IMEI.
- Check the tax the system works out for your phone.
- Generate your PSID.
- Pay the full amount through a bank, ATM, or mobile wallet.
- Wait for the payment to clear and your phone to be cleared, usually within a few hours.
- Restart your phone and check your SIM is working.
If your PSID runs out before you pay, just make a new one.
What Is a PSID?
PSID stands for Payment Slip ID. It is the number DIRBS makes when you apply to register your phone, and it holds the exact tax for your device.
It is good for 7 days. You pay it through a bank, ATM, or mobile wallet, and the money reaches FBR on its own. If it runs out before you pay, the application is cancelled and you make a fresh one. The new amount might be a little different if the rate has moved.
Can You Pay iPhone 16 PTA Tax in Installments?
Not through DIRBS. Not right now.
The 2026-27 budget did not bring in any installment plan for mobile tax. DIRBS still makes one PSID and wants one full payment. There is no official way to split it.
Some shops advertise installment deals for the tax. These are their own private plans, with their own charges. They are not a PTA or FBR service, so read the terms before you agree to one.
Latest FBR and PTA Updates (2026-27)
Valuation Ruling 2070/2026
Issued on 21 April 2026, it replaced the January ruling. It sets values for 62 older and used phones, and it does not include the iPhone 16. If an article is still using the January ruling, it is out of date. You can see the current rulings on the FBR valuations page.
Budget 2026-27 Regulatory Duty Cut
From 1 July 2026, the 2026-27 budget cut Regulatory Duty on imported phones by 20 percent. FBR said this makes expensive imported phones cheaper by about Rs 10,000 to 14,000 each. There was no rise in customs duty on imported smartphones.
What This Means for iPhone 16 Buyers
Expect the tax to be a little lower than figures from before July 2026. The saving comes from the duty cut, not from sales tax. Phones worth more than 500 dollars, which includes the Pro and Pro Max, still pay the 25 percent luxury sales tax. As always, check your exact amount on DIRBS before paying.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating an online estimate as the final amount. Only your PSID gives you the real figure.
Forgetting about the exchange rate. Your tax follows the dollar, so it moves as the rupee moves.
Missing the registration window and letting the phone get blocked.
Mixing up DVS and DIRBS. DVS checks status, DIRBS works out and takes the tax.
Thinking storage changes the tax. It does not.
Letting your PSID run out and having to start over.
Trusting an unofficial installment ad without reading the terms.
Paying a dealer who says the phone is already registered, without checking the IMEI yourself first.
