PTA Tax Installment Plan 2026 in Pakistan
You might have heard in the news that PTA tax can now be paid in installments. If your phone is unregistered, you were probably happy about it. You thought you could finally register it by paying a little every month.
That happiness makes sense. PTA tax is expensive, especially on the latest iPhone and Samsung models, and most people cannot pay that much money at one time. That is why so many phones in Pakistan are never registered. People buy the phone, use it as non-PTA, and keep using it until the SIM stops working.
So after that news came out, one question matters more than anything else. Are installments actually available or not?
The news itself was not wrong. The law really did change in the Budget 2026-27, and installments are now allowed. But allowed and available are two different things, and only the first one has happened.
Here is what is actually true right now.
Can You Pay PTA Tax in Installments Right Now?
No. There is no working installment system for PTA tax at the moment.
You still pay the full amount before your phone is registered. If you pay only a part of it, nothing happens. The phone is not approved until the whole tax is cleared.
| Question | Where it stands |
|---|---|

| When did it take effect? | 1 July 2026 |
| Is there an installment option on DIRBS? | No |
| Can you pay part of the tax and register? | No |
| Is full payment still required? | Yes |

What Changed in Budget 2026-27
The change was made to the Ninth Schedule of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.
In simple words, it says that a person who has to pay tax on an imported phone through PTA's DIRBS system is allowed to pay that tax in installments, following a procedure the government will decide later. It applies to both new and used imported phones. It came into effect on 1 July 2026.
There is one condition written into the law. All the installments have to be paid before the end of the financial year in which the phone was imported.
That condition is more important than it looks. Pakistan's financial year starts in July and ends in June. So if you import a phone in July, you would have almost twelve months to finish the payments. If you import it in May, you would have about one month. The later in the year you bring the phone in, the less an installment plan would help you, even after it starts working.
Why Is There No Installment Option on DIRBS?
This is the part that confuses most people, so it is worth explaining properly.
When parliament passes a law, it gives permission for something. It does not build the system that lets you do it.
For you to actually pay in installments, a few more things have to happen. FBR has to decide the rules, meaning how many installments you get, how much each one is, and what happens if you miss one. DIRBS has to be updated so the option shows up when you register. Banks have to be able to accept a part payment against your PSID.
None of that has been announced.
So the registration process today is exactly the same as it was before the budget. You get an assessment, you get a PSID with the full amount on it, and you pay it.
The Fake PTA Notification That Spread in July
In early July, a document started spreading online. It looked official, and it said installment payments had started on DIRBS.
It was fake.
PTA said publicly that it had never issued any such notification. In the same statement, PTA explained something that clears up a lot of confusion around this whole topic. Deciding and collecting tax on mobile phones is FBR's job, not PTA's. PTA only handles device registration and blocking through DIRBS. It does not decide what you pay.
PTA also said the only real notice it had put out around that time was about DIRBS maintenance.
If you saw that document and have been waiting for the installment option because of it, that is why nothing has appeared.
| Date | What happened | What it meant for you |
|---|---|---|
| 23 June 2026 | Finance Bill 2026-27 passed with the installment provision | Permission given in law |
| 1 July 2026 | The change took effect | Law active, no system built |
| Early July 2026 | Fake notification spread online | It said installments had started. They had not |
| Early July 2026 | PTA rejected the notification | Confirmed no such order exists |
| Today | No procedure announced | Full payment still required |
How to Register and Pay PTA Tax Today
Nothing here has changed, so this is the process as it stands.
- Check your phone's status first, so you know whether tax is owed on it at all.
- Start registration on the DIRBS portal, from inside Pakistan.
- The system creates a PSID with the exact tax amount on it.
- Pay that full amount through a bank, an ATM, or a mobile banking app.
- Once the payment clears, the phone is registered and the SIM keeps working.
The PSID is the only figure that counts. Any amount you see before that, including the estimate from our PTA tax calculator, is there to help you plan. It is not the amount you pay against.
If you have not checked your phone's status yet, start there. Our guide on how to check PTA tax on any phone covers every method, and it takes less than a minute.
Is There a PTA Installment Calculator?
No. There is nothing to calculate yet.
To work out an installment schedule you need the rules behind it. How many payments are allowed, whether there is a down payment, when each one is due, and what happens if one is late. None of those numbers exist. So if a website shows you a monthly PTA installment figure, that figure is made up.
| What you want to know | Can you find it today? |
|---|---|
| Estimated tax on your model | Yes, from a calculator |
| Exact tax you owe | Yes, from the PSID during registration |
| Monthly installment amount | No |
| Number of installments allowed | No |
| Due dates | No |
What Should You Do If You Cannot Pay the Full Tax?
Your situation decides this, and there are really only two situations.
If you need the phone working now
Pay the full amount. Waiting means losing the phone. A phone runs on a Pakistani SIM for 60 days before it is blocked, and after that there are no calls, no messages, and no mobile data. Only Wi-Fi. You get no warning on day 59.
If you have not imported the phone yet and you can wait
You can hold off and watch for the procedure to be announced. But be honest with yourself about the financial year condition. If you are close to the end of the year, an installment plan would not give you enough months to make it worth the wait.
Where to Check for Official Updates
Two places, and only two.
FBR is where the procedure will come from, because tax rules are theirs to make.
DIRBS is where the option would appear during registration if it goes live.
