iPhone SE PTA Tax in Pakistan 2026

iPhone SE PTA tax in Pakistan 2026 for SE 2016, SE 2020 and SE 2022

The iPhone SE PTA tax in Pakistan is around PKR 5,101 on CNIC and PKR 3,776 on passport.

The amount is the same for all three iPhone SE models. The 2016 model, the 2020 model and the 2022 model all cost the same to register.

One thing confuses people here. You call your phone an iPhone SE 2020 or an iPhone SE 2022. FBR does not use those names. On the FBR list they are written as iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE 3. People look for their year, do not find it, and think their model is missing. It is not missing. This guide shows both names together so you can find yours.

The basic rule first. Every phone used in Pakistan has to be registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority before it can accept a local SIM. If it is not registered, no Pakistani SIM will work in it and only Wi-Fi will work. To register it you pay a tax, collected by FBR. The amount depends on the model and on whether you register with your CNIC or your passport.

The customs value is different for each model, but the tax is the same. The reason is explained below.

These are estimates. Your exact amount is generated by DIRBS when you register, because it depends on the dollar rate that day. Check your own figure on the official DIRBS portal before you pay.

Which iPhone SE Do You Have

This does not change your tax, because all three cost the same. It matters when you are buying one. The 2016 model and the 2022 model are six years apart and sell at very different prices.

The 2016 model is easy to recognise. It has a small 4 inch screen, it looks like an iPhone 5s, and it has a headphone jack at the bottom. If the phone is much smaller than a normal phone today, it is the 2016 model.

The 2020 and 2022 models are harder to tell apart. Both have a 4.7 inch screen, both look like an iPhone 8, both have a round home button, and neither has a headphone jack. Placed next to each other, they look the same.

To check a 2020 or 2022 model, open Settings, then General, then About, and look at Model Name. It shows the generation. If your iOS version does not show Model Name, check for 5G instead. The 2022 model has 5G and the 2020 model does not.

Why All Three iPhone SE Models Cost the Same

FBR does not charge tax as a percentage of the phone's value. It puts phones into brackets, and every phone in a bracket pays one fixed amount.

The bracket that applies here covers phones valued between USD 30 and USD 100. All three iPhone SE models are inside it. The 2016 model at USD 47, the 2020 model at USD 52 and the 2022 model at USD 73 are all above USD 30 and all below USD 100. So all three pay the same fixed amount.

USD 30 to USD 100PKR 5,101PKR 3,776
USD 100 to USD 200PKR 8,651PKR 6,670

This is also why the SE costs the same as some other older iPhones. The iPhone 8 PTA tax in Pakistan and the PTA tax on the iPhone X are in this same bracket. For more detail on how these values are set, see our guide to the FBR valuation ruling for used phones.

iPhone SE PTA Tax on CNIC and Passport

PTA charges two different rates for the same phone. The rate you pay depends on the document you register with.

Registration TypeAmountWho Can Use It
CNICPKR 5,101Anyone registering a phone inside Pakistan
PassportPKR 3,776Travellers registering within 60 days of arrival

The passport rate is around PKR 1,325 lower. It has one condition. You must have brought the phone into Pakistan yourself, and your passport must show that you arrived within the last 60 days. You cannot buy a phone from a shop in Pakistan and ask for the passport rate.

For most people reading this, the CNIC rate applies.

WhatsApp on the iPhone SE 2016

This only applies to the 2016 model.

The iPhone SE 2016 cannot be updated past iOS 15.8.8. That is enough for WhatsApp today, so the app works normally right now.

From 30 November 2026, WhatsApp needs iOS 15.5 or newer. The SE 2016 can be updated to iOS 15.8.8, so the phone can meet that requirement. You need to install the update before that date. Open Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install what it offers.

If you do not install it, WhatsApp will stop working on the phone after November. The 2020 and 2022 models run newer versions of iOS and are not affected.

Short version. SE 2016 owners should update to iOS 15.5 or newer before 30 November 2026. SE 2020 and SE 2022 owners do not need to do anything.

Is It Worth Registering an iPhone SE

The tax is the same for all three models, but the phones are not the same. So the answer is different for each one.

For the iPhone SE 2022, yes. It has an A15 chip, the same chip as the iPhone 13, so it is fast and it will keep receiving iOS updates for years. PKR 5,101 is a reasonable amount to pay for it.

For the iPhone SE 2020, usually yes. It runs current apps without trouble and supports recent iOS versions. At this age the battery is the main problem, so check battery health in Settings before you buy one.

For the iPhone SE 2016, think about it first. It is a ten year old phone, the screen is small, the battery is probably worn, and iOS 15.8.8 is the last version it can run. If you are buying one, add PKR 5,101 to the asking price and compare that total against a newer phone.

This applies to all three models. The registration cost does not go down for older phones, so buying the oldest model saves less than you expect.

iPhone SE PTA Approved Price in Pakistan

There are two ways to get a working iPhone SE in Pakistan.

The first is buying a non PTA phone at a lower price and registering it yourself. You pay the asking price plus PKR 5,101. This only makes sense if the non PTA phone is more than PKR 5,101 cheaper.

The second is buying a phone that is already PTA approved. It costs more because the tax is already included in the price, but you know your total before you pay and the phone will not be blocked.

In both cases, check the IMEI on DIRBS before you agree a price. A seller saying the phone is approved is not the same as checking it.

How to Check the Exact PTA Tax on Your iPhone SE

  1. Dial *#06# on the phone to see the IMEI number. You can also find it in Settings, then General, then About.
  2. Open the official DIRBS portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
  3. Enter the IMEI and check the status of the device.
  4. If it is not registered, go to the registration section and start a request.
  5. The system gives you a PSID with the exact tax for that IMEI.
  6. Pay the PSID through your bank app, an ATM, or a bank branch.

The amount on the PSID is the real one. Everything else, including this page, is an estimate. Our guide on checking PTA tax by IMEI explains each step in more detail, and you can check the tax on any phone model with our calculator.

If Your iPhone SE Is Already Blocked

Blocked means the 60 day period ended and the SIM stopped working. Nothing else happens.

There is no fine. The tax does not increase because you waited. You can register the phone today and it will work again once the payment clears, usually within a day.

If you bought the phone secondhand and it was already blocked, register it on your own CNIC. You do not need the previous owner and you do not need any documents from them.

Can You Pay the iPhone SE PTA Tax in Installments

No. PTA tax is one payment against the PSID that DIRBS gives you. There is no official installment option for any model. Our post on the PTA tax installment plan explains this in full.

The phone supports 5G, but Pakistani networks have not launched commercial 5G yet, so it runs on 4G here. This does not affect your PTA tax.
Only if you do not update it. From 30 November 2026 WhatsApp needs iOS 15.5, and the SE 2016 can be updated to iOS 15.8.8. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update and install what it offers before that date.
For the 2022 model, yes. It uses the same chip as the iPhone 13 and will keep receiving updates. The 2020 model is usually worth it if the battery is healthy. For the 2016 model, add the tax to the price you are being asked and compare it against a newer phone first.
